History

In 1976, archivists across Kentucky came together to discuss the formation of a statewide association dedicated to promoting archives and archivists' work. Among the founding members of what would become the Kentucky Council on Archives (KCA) were Lew Bellardo of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives; Sr. Mary Michael Creamer, SCN, of Spalding University; Penny Harrison and Pat Hodges of Western Kentucky University; Bill Marshall of the University of Kentucky; and Bill Morison of the University of Louisville.

The newly established Kentucky Council on Archives held its inaugural meeting at Western Kentucky University on March 28, 1977, with initial membership dues set at just $2. Penny Harrison was pivotal in KCA’s early years, serving as treasurer and archivist from 1976 to 1986.

KCA has hosted semi-annual meetings for nearly five decades, providing Kentucky archivists opportunities to learn and discuss emerging archival practices, explore new projects, and share expertise from institutions across the Commonwealth. Over the years, KCA has welcomed presentations from distinguished leaders in archival and related fields and helped facilitate the Society of American Archivists’ continuing education courses.

Since 1979, KCA has published The Kentucky Archivist, a newsletter offering updates on archival initiatives, professional development opportunities, scholarships, and events. Additionally, KCA maintains an active email listserv to facilitate communication among members.

In 2025, the Kentucky Council on Archives record collection will be transferred from Western Kentucky University to the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, ensuring its preservation and accessibility for future generations.
